How do you solve an equation with fractions in it?
Solving an equation with fractions involves one incredibly useful trick: getting rid of the fractions immediately. You do this by multiplying every single term on both sides of the equation by a common multiple of the denominators.
Think of it like dealing with different currencies. If you are trying to add quarters, dimes, and nickels, you might convert everything to pennies first to make the math simple. In algebra, multiplying by the Least Common Denominator (LCD) converts all your fractional pieces into whole numbers, leaving you with a standard linear equation.
What is clearing fractions?
Clearing fractions is a technique where you find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) for all the fractions in your equation. The LCD is the smallest number that every denominator can divide into evenly. Once you find it, you multiply the entire left side and the entire right side of the equation by this number. Because you are multiplying by a multiple of the denominators, all the fractions cancel out into whole numbers.
Why it works
This method relies on the Multiplication Property of Equality. This rule states that if you multiply both sides of an equation by the exact same non-zero number, the two sides remain equal. You aren't changing the truth of the equation or the value of the variable; you are simply changing what the equation looks like so it is easier to solve.
Where students slip up
The most common mistake students make is forgetting to multiply the whole numbers. When you multiply both sides by the LCD, you must distribute that number to every single term, even the ones that do not have fractions. Another common error is messing up the distribution when there is a minus sign in front of a fraction; remember that the negative applies to the entire numerator.
