How does photosynthesis work step by step?
Photosynthesis is the process plants use to turn sunlight into food. Think of a plant as a tiny solar-powered kitchen. It takes raw ingredients from the air and soil, uses solar energy to cook them, and produces sugar to feed itself, releasing oxygen as a byproduct. Specifically, photosynthesis happens in two main steps inside the chloroplasts of plant cells: the light-dependent reactions that capture solar energy, and the light-independent reactions (the Calvin cycle) that build the sugar.
The Light-Dependent Reactions: Capturing Energy
This first stage happens in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast. Sunlight hits a pigment called chlorophyll, exciting electrons and splitting water molecules. This split releases oxygen as a waste product (which we breathe) and generates ATP and NADPH. Think of ATP and NADPH as fully charged batteries ready to power the next step.
The Calvin Cycle: Building the Sugar
Also known as the light-independent reactions, this stage takes place in the stroma, which is the fluid inside the chloroplast. The plant takes in carbon dioxide () from the air. Using the energy from the ATP and NADPH 'batteries' charged in the first step, enzymes piece together the carbon atoms to build glucose (), a simple sugar the plant uses for growth and energy.
Where Students Slip Up
A common mistake is thinking the Calvin cycle only happens in the dark because older textbooks called it the 'dark reactions'. In reality, it usually happens during the day because it needs a constant supply of ATP and NADPH from the light-dependent reactions. Another common mix-up is forgetting that plants also do cellular respiration; they make glucose through photosynthesis, but they still need to break it down to use the energy, just like animals do.
